Yours can too, read to find out how.

The Solar Home
This house is the product of Colorado University’s 2005 Solar Decathlon entry. The Solar Decathlon is an intercollegiate competition held every few years where teams are judged on 10 performance tests. While the competition as a whole is geared toward solar energy, CU’s 2005 effort focused on energy efficiency first.

Jeff Lyng, Project Manager for CU’s Solar Decathlon House, revealed in an interview with HomeAdvisor, an online service that matches homeowners and contractors, that “energy efficiency is far more cost effective than renewable energy.” As a result, the CU team built their home to make sense to the public rather than have a zero net-energy home that ran on sunflower seeds, which would have been fantastic but not very practical.

  1. Paint your walls. If you live in a rented space, this might not be an option for you. However, if you’re able to, painting the walls in your house can be one of the quickest ways to freshen up the look and add a bit of interest. Choose a color that complements your personality and fits your space. If you’re bubbly and fun, consider a golden yellow or bright green. Calm and collected? A shade of gray or blue might be more your pace. Paint isn’t permanent, so feel free to experiment with colors until you find a look you love!

    • Don’t be afraid to try several colors spread throughout your home; although you don’t want many different bright colors, painting each room a different color is totally appropriate.
    • Although it’s not as in style as it used to be, you can apply wallpaper on an accent wall to add a bit of pattern, if you want. There are even wall decals that act like wallpaper but are removable, if you’re

How to Furnish Your Home

It’s very practical to select furniture and furnishings that you could use in any room in your home. Read these tips on choosing furniture and accessory pieces that can work well in small or large rooms, offer storage, and can be moved around the house when you need to.

Tips of Home Furnishing:

• If your new home is in a pre-planned community, check out the developer’s model home for pieces you like. They may be a bit worn, but often the developer will sell off the home’s furniture after a period of time. It’s a great way get room sets that are already coordinated.

• When furnishing a living room or family room, choose 2 loveseats rather than one huge sofa. They’ll be easier to move and can be used forming a corner seating area, opposite each other to create a conversation spot, or separately in different rooms of your home.

• When looking at used furniture – or any used furnishings – don’t think of what they look like now, but what they could look like with a little refurbishing. Maybe that coffee table wouldn’t fit your living room now, but sand it down and add a coat of stain and it might not be

How To Create Your Perfect Garden

Garden landscaping ideas are always handy when planning garden designs. Be it a flower garden, herb garden or even a water garden, there are some basic princpals you should follow.

How would you go about creating your perfect garden? What ideas do you have that you would like to see come alive. Do you fancy the idea of a country style cottage garden with narrow winding pathways and fruit trees or would you rather see a grand splendour of lights, colour and clean-cut modern lines? Regardless of style, the best garden designs stem from those who inject personality into their landscaping ideas.

The first step is learning how to utilise the space you have. As the saying goes – it’s the size you have but what you do with it that counts. There couldn’t be a better statement in gardening terms. Many small town gardens have some truly stunning designs. In fact, in my town there is an annual ‘secret gardens’ day where local people open up their gardens for anyone to come and take a peak. There is also a prize for best three at the end of the day. It’s a large affair and although the number grows each year,

Best way to rid a garden of pesky snails Use your strong throwing arm

The new study published May 16 in the journal Physica Scripta has used statistical models to show that simply killing the snails you find in your garden offers little advantage if you want to remove them completely.

According to the researchers gardeners should revert to damage limitation, as their results proved that snails are part of larger colonies that live in the garden and come and go as they please using a homing instinct.

As opposed to simply killing a snail, throwing it over the wall is pretty effective, and the results showed that if snails are moved out of the garden by a distance of 20 meters or more, the likelihood of those particular snails finding their way back home into the garden was almost zero.

Co-author of the study Professor David Dunstan, from Queen Mary’s School of Physics and Astronomy, said: “We showed that the number of snails regularly or irregularly visiting a garden is many times greater than the number actually present at any one time in the garden.

“As such, gardeners shouldn’t be setting out to eliminate their gardens of snails. To achieve such a feat would require the gardener to rid the whole neighbourhood of snails,

Arts and Crafts

The Arts and Craft style focuses largely on organic designs and the natural beauty of the great outdoors. Traditional craftsmanship and handmade features characterize the true essence of this style and its celebration of natural influences. Arts and Crafts emerged in the 20th Century, when people became tired of the stuffy and overwrought characteristics of the style of the Victorian era.

Arts and Crafts is heavily influenced by the use of wood. While oak is the style’s iconic wood of choice, pine, maple and other indigenous woods are often used. The woods used are almost never painted, but rather are accented with rich stains to emphasize the wood’s natural, organic beauty and variety in the grain. It is not uncommon for wood to be beautifully decorated with handmade designs and placed on display to show its handiwork. Colors used in Arts and Crafts can be found in nature, including greens, browns and grays. Other colors, such as yellow or blue, typically have a muted feel to them and pastels are not used. Warm, rich colors and hand-painted details are often used to emphasize the natural beauty of the wood used in the home’s architecture and furniture. Handmade, unadorned wooden furniture is

Dryer vent cannot be considered as one common thing in many houses in Arizona. However, there are not few houses that use the dryer vent to make sure that all of their clothes are dried. How to Shop Wisely for a New Home

Don’t believe Mick Jagger — if you’re embarking on a journey to buy and build a new home, you can get what you want in your dream home.

The key is to do your homework first — and then to plan and organize your shopping process to ensure that your journey is rewarding, concise — and most of all, enjoyable.

Builders and consumers who’ve bought and built a new home agree it’s fun, exciting and rewarding. Our goal is to demystify the new home shopping process so you know what to expect.

The key is simple: Ask plenty of questions. As you do so, you’ll learn which type of home, neighborhood and mortgage are right for you and better understand the exciting choices you’ll make — including which new home community, builder, and lot is right for you — and choices you’ll make to personalize your home.

When you’re looking at new homes, you’re in good company. According to the 2012 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers from The National Association of Realtors, the majority of consumers considering another home consider new homes. That’s not surprising, since new homes offer:

  • open floor plans that reflect the way we live today, especially family rooms that open

Building a New Home Frame with Steel

Steel framing is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of using traditional wood construction to frame your new home, your contractor will use steel beams to support your home instead. Steel framing is stronger than wood construction, doesn’t warp or crack like wood, is impervious to insect infestations and is very cost comparable to boot. If you’re looking into building a new home, think about metal stud framing.

Earthquake and Hurricane Proof
Perhaps the biggest draw to using steel to frame your home is its structural integrity. You simply can’t find a stronger, more resilient framing material on the market. It’s the main reason why steel framing has become a popular choice for areas prone to earthquakes and hurricanes. It won’t split or crack under duress and can survive winds of up to 180 miles per hour! And unlike wood, steel won’t warp, crack or split over time. Be it a natural disaster or simply the passage of time, steel construction bests wood.

Termites Don’t Eat Metal
The other big draw of steel framing is that it is impervious to insect infestation. Bugs simply don’t find steel very appetizing. This can be a major selling point if you live in an area

America’s Five Greenest Flooring Options

5. Bamboo
When Better Homes and Gardens‘, “wanted our test kitchens to look, feel, and perform like the very best kitchen any of us could imagine for our own home,” bamboo ended up being the flooring material of choice. High quality bamboo flooring is every bit as hard as oak or maple (which makes it significantly harder than pine), and its look is as unique as it is beautiful. Unlike traditional hardwood trees (some of which need to grow for 50 to 100 years before they are harvested), bamboo can be harvested after only 5 or 6 years, which makes it one of the most eco-friendly flooring options on the market.

4. Cork
While utilized by such big names in architecture as Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright, historically, cork has been far better known as the plug in a wine bottle than as a building material. Today, however, cork flooring is quickly gaining popularity because of its eco-friendliness. Since it is made from the regenerative bark of the cork tree rather than the wood, the tree itself can continue to live and produce more cork after the material for the floor has been harvested. Cork floors are also

Going Green in Sunrooms and Patio Enclosures

A new sunroom is a valuable addition to any home, providing an open, well-lit, and spacious area for homeowners and their families to relax in and enjoy. On the other hand, sunrooms also present significant challenges when it comes to energy efficiency and year round comfort, primarily due to the large surface area devoted to windows and glass. One of the easiest ways to meet those challenges is to adopt a green building philosophy. Green remodeling utilizes a combination of innovative green design ideas, energy-efficient building materials and practices, and environmentally friendly building solutions to create a sunroom that’s as energy efficient and comfortable as it is beautiful.

Evaluating the Cost of Going Green in the Sunroom
When it comes to building a green sunroom, you’re looking at a classic example of weighing increased project costs against increased energy efficiency. While energy-efficient, green building materials such as low e with low solar heat gain, multiple paned windows will cost more initially than less efficient materials, the payoff in long-term energy savings is so substantial that footing the higher initial cost is worth its weight in gold. Add to that the fact that green building aims to create a sunroom that

Go Green with Solar Panels

Few projects in the home improvement sector are greener than solar panel installation. After all, our reliance on fossil fuels can be blamed on everything from skyrocketing home heating and cooling costs to the potentially devastating effects of global warming, making it clear that anything a homeowner can do to reduce our dependency on non-renewable resources is a smart move from a green perspective. Add to that the fact that the sun is the most renewable energy resource in the solar system, and there’s no doubt that solar panel installation is as green as it gets.

Energy Drinks and Energy Home Improvements Jolt or Crash

Nowadays, everything seems to be about energy. Amongst all the doom and gloom of economic analysis and forecasts, some of the only sectors that remain optimistic have to do with energy. Energy drink sales shot up 39.6 percent in 2006 and another 29.7 percent in 2007, according to Convenience Store News. Even more significantly, despite the perception that energy drinks are reaching their own bubble, the same study has projected a 19.9 percent increase in 2008.

In recent years, HomeAdvisor, an online resource connecting homeowners with local contractors, has established energy-efficient home improvement tendencies by combining common projects such as new appliances, insulation, replacement windows, and solar panel installation. According to this statistic, “energy” home improvement saw a 76.4 percent jump in 2006, another 79.8 percent jump in 2007, and a projected jump of 107.2 percent this year. According to one U.N. study, the green economy at-large, dominated by energy-efficient technologies, is expected to double by 2020.

Here is a list of four of the biggest and best-selling names in both energy drinks and home improvements. Let’s call it a synergy of energy.

Red Bull: Insulation
The original energy drink is also the original energy-efficient material. After all, clothes and blankets are essentially

Choosing Green Kitchen Remodels

Kitchens are an excellent candidate for homeowners who look to “green” their home improvement projects. For starters, kitchen remodels tend to be large undertakings, and since the greenest remodeling project is one that starts from the ground up, they provide homeowners with the opportunity to incorporate a wide range of green alternatives into the overall design. Even if you’re just upgrading your countertops, cabinets, appliances, or plumbing, a green kitchen remodel is a great starting place for a greener home.

Calculating the True Value of Green Kitchen Remodeling
While the cost of a kitchen remodel is first in the mind of most homeowners, it’s difficult to place a specific cost on green remodeling in the kitchen. The level of green each homeowner is willing to commit to varies, as does the scope of individual green kitchen remodels. What we can tell you is this:

    • Green kitchen remodeling doesn’t necessarily mean more expensive materials. Most green building materials are cost-competitive with traditional ones, and many actually cost less than non-green alternatives.

    • Green building focuses on creating low-maintenance, long lasting kitchens, so you’ll pay less for repairs and replacements over the life of your addition.

    • Green kitchen remodeling is guaranteed to reduce energy costs in the

Choosing Green Basement Remodels

A basement remodel is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to add valuable square footage to your home. But basements can also present some significant remodeling challenges, such as working with limited and awkward spaces, alleviating moisture problems, and meeting design challenges such as where to run plumbing, ductwork, and other utilities. Add to that the higher standards of green remodeling in the areas of energy efficiency, healthy indoor environments, and the type of materials you use, and it becomes clear that you need to know what you’re doing if you hope to get a green basement remodel off on the right foot. Drawing directly form green remodeling expert David Johnston’s wealth of knowledge on the subject, HomeAdvisor is here to help with a green project guide for the basement.

The Costs of Going Green
Truth be told, pinning down an accurate dollar amount for going green in the basement is easier said than done. The level of green that each homeowner is willing to commit to varies, as does the level of work required by each individual product. That goes double for basements, especially if you have moisture problems to address before the actual remodeling begins. That being
